Climbers To Raise Money For Fresno County Schools

Story submitted by Fresno County Office of Education:

Climbers with a Cause to Benefit The Foundation @ FCOE.

Local rock climbers Les Phillips and Drew Brodhead will ascend the sheer face of El Capitan in Yosemite over a period of four to five days in an effort to raise funds for innovative programs in local K-12 schools.

All donations will go directly to support individual teacher grants in Fresno County through a program known as Innovative Grants.

Les and Drew will maintain an ongoing blog detailing their preparation for the climb as well as the actual climb in May. They will also engage a local classroom of middle school students in the excitement via distance communication and actual classroom visits.

The climb is scheduled for May 20-24.

Spell-Checked! Sign Outside Fresno School Spelled Wrong

Spell-Checked! Sign Outside Fresno School Spelled Wrong

It's not the students in Central Unified who deserve an "F" for a spelling mistake -- it's whoever made a sign outside the school.

The sign is outside Madison Elementary School near Highway 99 and Brawley.

It's a school zone speed limit sign, and it's misspelled, "childern".

Fresno County is in charge of making and installing the signs.

KMPH informed the district, and the sign is on its way to being replaced.

Student Claims Teacher Slapped His Face

The mother of a Fresno County high school student is furious over how her son was treated at school by his teacher.

Esteban Guiverra is a freshman at Central High's West campus. He says he was slapped in the face by his Academic Prep teacher Tuesday morning.

The student admits he defied the teacher by trying to put money in a donation box, part of a campaign on campus called "Pennies for Patients."

But Esteban Guiverra says, "I grabbed the box myself and tried to put the money in there and he snatched it out of my hand, and as he snatched it, he slapped me across the face."

Esteban's mother, Penelope Villa says, "I asked the vice–principal what exactly happened. She said the teacher admitted to slapping your son and we're taking care of it."

Central Unified would only say, "We can not confirm it happened, because it's a confidential personnel matter. But we want the public to know the district is taking any such allegations seriously."
